Comparing and Contrasting Different Types of Tarps

A1 Tarps can teach you about the varieties of tarps available, and what they are best suited for.

Tarps are great tools because they are so versatile. A good tarp can help a property owner handle a variety of tasks. But if you have a specific goal in mind, you may be able to find a tarp specifically tailored to it. Here is a rundown of the basic types of tarps and the best uses for each. We'll start with the three biggest categories.

Poly Tarps

This is our most popular and varied category. Using strong, lightweight polyethylene material, our poly tarps are best for general use, from protecting property to covering damage. Our poly tarps have several subcategories of strength, from economy class to super heavy-duty tarps, and they come in a variety of colors and tarp sizes. If you are looking for general use or emergency preparedness, these are your best bet.

Canvas Tarps

These are not quite waterproof, because we use breathable fabrics in each one. Outdoor enthusiasts and gardeners make the most use of these, and people with military experience know how to accomplish many assorted tasks using a canvas tarp.

Vinyl Tarps

Rounding out the three most common tarp types, our vinyl tarps are made from incredibly strong PVC vinyl and are built for durability. These are optimal for construction and industrial uses, including in areas that use strong chemicals or larger tools or equipment. These are also outstanding for hauling large truckloads or trailers of loose material, such as gravel or dirt.

Specialty Tarps

Within each of those categories are tarps made for a specialized purpose:

  • Mesh shade tarps. These tarps are not waterproof. Featuring a polypropylene mesh material, they block a majority of sunlight and allow breezes to pass through, making them outstanding for use on patios and decks, or out in a yard for shade. They can also be great for protecting plants.
  • Pond liners. These tarps are made to be incredibly large and tough, capable of holding the massive weight and pressure of water. One of these is a good investment for a fountain, retention pond or other water feature.
  • Fire retardant tarps. These are made to offer extra protection against fire damage. People who live in fire-prone areas or who work in construction sites will find these handy.
  • Truck tarps. These are built for the long haul, offering incredible strength and flexibility for covering cargo.
  • Hay tarps. These are made in tarp sizes that are helpful for outdoor hay bales, keeping that hay protected against mold and mildew, so that livestock has a fresh supply.
  • Fence tarps. These usually come in rolls, not folded packages, because they are made to create a barrier quickly and easily.
