What's the best approach to covering your investment or vehicle outdoors? Use a heavy-duty tarp. Vinyl and polyethylene are the two primary materials used for heavy-duty tarps, but the former is more common in large-scale and industrial applications.

For example, vinyl is often used for many truck tarps and tarps designed for use in chemically hazardous worksites such as laboratories. Polyethylene, on the other hand, is treated to be waterproof, UV-resistant, rot-proof, and mildew resistant. Made with a high-denier count, heavy-duty poly tarps are the most versatile and affordable material for protecting your investments outdoors.

Some vehicles, such as boats and RVs, are only used for part of the year. For the rest of the time, they need to be placed in storage. If your home is not equipped with a garage, heavy-duty waterproof tarps are strong enough to protect these seasonal vehicles. Specific boat and RV covers made from polyethylene are available, but those usually sacrifice quality for a custom fit that only looks good. Any large heavy-duty poly tarp can go over the surface and be secured to stay in place. Many vehicle owners often double up on these tarps to cover as much surface area as possible.

Heavy-duty tarps are so cost effective that buying one, two or even a few extra tarps won't break the bank. They're a cheap yet reliable way to cover your valuables and protect the paint, interior and exterior components of your vehicles. The waterproof properties keep out the rain, while the UV resistance protects the vehicle's surface from UV damage. Additionally, heavy-duty tarps don't lock moisture in, and air is allowed to circulate beneath to prevent the buildup of mold, mildew, and dry rot.

Although heavy-duty tarps are often used on their own, they're also part of many canopy structures. Portable garages and carports, for example, use a heavy-duty polyethylene tarp as the roof, sidewalls, and door. An open canopy, for example, will have a roof made from a heavy-duty polyethylene tarp, which has a 12" overhang on each side. Other full-coverage canopies use this material, which surrounds the entire vehicle. In this case, the waterproof properties and UV resistance prevent rain and UV rays from damaging the surface of the vehicle. Air circulation, additionally, prevents moisture from building up. The tear-proof weave of poly tarps is resilient and tough even when exposed to stormy weather or extended storage in the outdoors. You can comfortably shroud your vehicles in these tarps for months on end without a problem.

Heavy-duty tarps are used as coverage in other instances. On farms, for example, the material is wrapped around multiple bales of hay to prevent water damage and mold formation while in storage. On construction sites, the material may line a fence to keep dirt away from pedestrians, and may line a building frame to contain heat. Similarly, heavy-duty tarps, both polyethylene and vinyl, are used on trucks. While loads may need to stay inside a truck and shouldn't be exposed to water during transport, heavy-duty tarps do both of these things. In all cases when an investment, vehicle, or object needs protection from UV damage and water, heavy-duty tarps provide sufficient coverage.
